Zoho

  13. I can't disagree with கல்வெட்டு. I can't also help but be sadly reminded of the bonded labour system that many textile manufacturing companies practice in Tirupur area. As you may know, they recruit very young girls from extremely poor families in backward districts with the promise of a lump sum salary at the end of 3-5 years and a few sovereigns of gold that purportedly go towards the marriage expenses for the girl. I am told the deal is implemented fair and square, with the girls allowed to discontinue mid-way if they wish to and are treated reasonably well with safe accommodation and three meals a day. The argument for it is that for the girls there is nothing better anyway.

  15. I am B.Rajendran, a faculty at Zoho University(ZU) who has seen the students in close quarters.
ZU is an experiment in progress in the field of education. Before discussing the methodology of the experiment, the people on whom this experiment is conducted must be considered. Are they scape goats?

The students are trained not only in web technology, but in critical areas in Mathematics to discipline their mind.

English newspapers are regularly studied for them so that they are trained to observe the developments in the world in a neutral way without being biased.

They watch English movies and develop the habit of critical thinking on them.

This increases their general awareness, their English language skill and as a consequence of both and their employability and earning potential, their self confidence increases.

In case they leave zoho and go anywhere, they can very easily impress wherever they are and come up in life. One primary purpose of education is to improve clear thinking and self confidence and that is definitely achieved at Zoho University.

After a period of 30 months, the students are permitted to do distance education program. The experience they have gained during this period helps them understand whatever they read thouroughly and exprience has shown that the examinations in the distance education are just cake walks for them. BCA, BBA, BA (Corporate), MCA, MBA, MA (Sociology) MA(Political science) are some of the disciplines in which they will very easily get their degrees.

Individual's progress at Zoho is not based on his degree, but only on his performance. Put otherwise real merit is only recognized.

So, at the end of 7 and a half year, after leaving plus two, the students would have got a post-graduate degree and a 7 years experience at a senior software engineer level in a major concern if only they want to and strive for it.

Even if the students discontinue at the end of one year, they would have gained enough confidence to face the world, another major purpose of education.

There are lots of virtual universities in the web to offer 'recognized' degrees.

Since the monthly stipend is Rs.4k along with free lunch, dinner, coffee, snacks etc. their family is also substantially helped by them. Free from family worries, and examination worries, they pursue their education,in rhe right sense of the term, happily.

Not a single day, they hate to come to the University training. This is mostly because, examination in the usual sense is absent at ZU. ZU recognises that the learning skills are different to different students and they are permitted to learn at their own pace. Teachers and the environment are only facilitators and the students learn most of the time on their own. The desire to learn is in every mind and ZU teachers are able to experience the feelings in the minds of the students as they progress. They write code much better than even the teachers, in a short span of an year. Most of the time, a very sincere student will surpass his teacher, and therein lies the happiness of the teacher.

I wish more doubts are posted here, so that they can be cleared. Every body should subject themselves for criticism. Any criticism is for improvement. ZU is no exception and is well aware of it.

  16. During early 1990 Titan did the similar thing. I heard mixed comments about it. Based on your description, ZU's training is more broader than Titan. So it may be better than Titan.

  17. Instead of looking at the experiment just as a training methodology, I wish that it is looked upon as an alternative to the current Higher education along with its associated evil, 'Examinatiion'.
Today's examination caters to rot memory, cramming of subjects, if it is assignment or project - plagiarism, disinterestedness.
Whereas, this experiment sponsors 'learning by doing', motivation and kindling the desire to learn, rather than just testing for the sake of testing, encouragement rather than dominance, developing self confidence rather than demotivating.
There are many other successful experiments like 'one subject a full month' and so on.
I wish it is an eye opener to the academic councils and boards of examiners of those citadels of education with their lavish expenditures and associated costs.

  18. The earlier comment is from me, B.Rajendran.
    I am continuing.
All this 'training'/'education' is without any agreement or binding. The students continue their course on their own accord and continue to serve the industry at their own will. They can leave the course or the industry at any time and no compensation is claimed. 80% of the students completely undergo the course and 100% of those who join the industry, happily continue to serve here. Everyday you can find them coming to work happily, face challenging assignments confidently and walk out in the evening, not tired, but only exhausted of their own wish.
One of the students, who was on an assignment at Tokyo, was offered a lucrative job at a level 1 company, but coolly rejected it! this too of his own choice.

  22. This is the month of May - admission time at our University. We made a marathon attempt to select students, more than 6000 students tested, 500 students interviewed 60 students given admit card, 18 students joined.
Remember world class training at an industry with stipend, live projects, guaranteed success to get a job with a sincere effort, but 42 students rejected the offer in favour of 'recognised degree'.
Resources are available for 48 students more. Contact: Uma : 9840746320
    self: B.Rajendran: 9840927681
50 days training gone for those 18 students and all of them are very happy for having joined here, actively participating in all the activity, one such activity, giving a presentation of their choice to the Japanese team, who in turn would give a presentation of their choice. They are trying to make cultural exchanges.
